While New York City can be an expensive place to visit, one of the best parts of the city is completely FREE: the parks! Here are our top 6 favorite parks in the city:
1. Central Park
Central Park is not just the best park in New York City, but in our opinion, this is the best park in the world! This 843 acre park includes a zoo, many playgrounds, a lake with row boats, a castle and seemingly endless fields and rocks to climb. You could spend days exploring and not experience all of it! Beyond just the beauty of the park and the experiences within, it's a great place to people watch!
2. Prospect Park
Prospect Park is Central Park’s little sister, but not that much smaller. At over 500 acres, this park has lot to experience with an ice skating rink, lake, trails, fields, playgrounds and so much more! When it’s snowing, there’s not a much better place to go sledding in New York City than Prospect Park.
3. Carl Schurz Park
We might be a bit biased as this park is in our Upper East Side neighborhood, but we think Carl Schurz Park is one of the best unknown gems in the city. With a great playground, basketball courts, a dog park, beautiful garden walking trails and a walkway along the East River this park has something for everyone. The park is probably best known as the location of the Mayor’s mansion which is worth walking by.
4. Washington Square Park
Located just outside of New York University, this park is well known from many television shows and movies with the beautiful arch at the entry and fountain in the center. While this park is small with minimal activities, it is always packed with excitement from sidewalk entertainers to park visitors. In the summer you can usually hear beautiful music coming from the grand piano located on the southwest side of the park.
5. Rockefeller Park
Located on the southwest edge of Manhattan, this park provides a great place to relax while in Lower Manhattan visiting the World Trade Center or Wall Street. Enjoy a picnic on the large, grassy area or let the kids run around and get some energy out while you gaze at the Hudson river.
6. Brooklyn Bridge Park
One of our family favorites, this park along the East River in Brooklyn provides some of the best views of Lower Manhattan. The park includes great playgrounds, slides, unique swings and even a carousel for the kids. BBP is also home to the original Juliana's and Grimaldi's pizza. If you want some great pics of the city, this is the best place to get them.
There are dozens of great parks throughout New York City and these are just a few! A couple others that don’t make this list, but would make our honorable mention are Battery Park, Domino Park and Riverside Park.
